Text Box: Because we are a street self-defense school, we do not practice sparring as often as our sport karate and Taekwondo counterparts. If a person didn’t fight the way they trained, then why practice fighting? Even the cage fighting, NHB and UFC type mixed martial arts fighting has rules. Safety factors must be put into all of these events. It would be foolish not to have a factor of safety for the competitors. That being said, we do practice some sparring for the students to build confidence and to see what it is like when someone is fighting back. We are very cautious with our younger students. We do not allow aggressive behavior except with a large and more skilled student or instructor. This is done for a full week after belt exams. Belt exams are every 3 months during regular class throughout the 3rd week of that month.
